Introduction: Battling the Struggles of Maintaining a Fitness Plan
It’s the end of January 2021, and like many others, I found myself struggling to stick to my fitness plans. There were countless moments where I felt like giving up on my diet and exercise regimen. I came to realize that two major factors were hindering my progress: the tendency to seek quick fixes rather than embracing a long-term lifestyle change, and choosing diet and exercise plans that were unsustainable in the long run. As an athlete for most of my life, exercise wasn’t the issue; it was my diet, particularly my penchant for indulging in foods that made me feel like a 15-year-old boy, despite being 40. The battle to resist cheesecakes and night caps was real, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome these challenges.
Discovering the Challenge of a Slower Metabolism
During my 20s, I could seemingly drop 5 pounds with just one good bowel movement after eating whatever I wanted. My 30s with added responsibilities of children were manageable as long as I kept up with regular exercise. However, turning 40 revealed an unexpected twist — my body seemed to resist metabolizing anything. The scale refused to budge, regardless of the exercise routines and diet plans I tried, from kickboxing and Zumba to running half-marathons and playing hours of tennis. The end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 marked a turning point, and I realized that I needed a new approach to make progress. After a heavy Thanksgiving meal left me in a food coma, I decided to explore local fitness studios, and this is how my journey with Orangetheory Fitness (Group Fitness Class & HIIT Workouts | Orangetheory Fitness US) began.
Starting the Orangetheory Fitness Journey
My spouse and I attended the trial class at Orangetheory Fitness. Though our schedules didn’t align, we signed up for different days. To my surprise, my husband, who typically disliked studio classes, thoroughly enjoyed the experience after the first session. Encouraged by this positive start, we registered for the starter program and have since become regular members at Orangetheory Fitness. In 2021, I became a premier member, attending 5 am classes at least six times a week, and now, I am in better shape than I was during my college athletic days, something I had struggled to achieve for years.
Key Elements that Transformed My Fitness Journey
When I reflect on my two-year journey with Orangetheory Fitness, I realize three key elements that have kept me motivated and engaged, setting this program apart from all my previous fitness endeavors.
1. Exercise Based on Heart Rate Zones: The Orange Theory
As a software engineer working in analytics, I value science and data in everything I do. Orangetheory Fitness leverages both these elements in its program, which instantly resonated with me. The concept revolves around exercising in different heart rate zones, with the orange zone being the key focus for burning the most calories. This is why it’s called “Orange Theory.” Whenever I enter the orange zone during a workout, I feel a sense of instant gratification, knowing that I’m effectively burning fat. This motivates me to push harder and stay in the zone.
Real-time data in terms of your heart rate and calorie burned provides motivation to do better throughout the course of the workout.
2. Instructor-Led Sessions: A Positive Start to the Day
Being a part of Orangetheory Fitness has been instrumental in setting my day on a positive note. As I roll out of bed at 4:15 am and begin my session at the studio by 5:00 am, I might be half-asleep, but I listen intently and follow every instruction from the coach. It’s almost like sleep-working-out, which oddly makes sense. By the time most people are just waking up, I have already accomplished one of my most important tasks for the day, giving me a great sense of accomplishment and a boost of serotonin, the natural happy hormone.
Getting my workout done before anyone else wakes out of bed not only boasts my happy hormones but also sets my day up for success.
3. Personalized Competition: Beating My Own Records
Despite the studio being filled with 20–30 people, I am not competing against them; instead, I compete against myself. Orangetheory Fitness offers various benchmarks and challenges, such as the number of splat points earned (minutes spent in the orange zone), calorie burn, and records for special workouts like the 2000M row or the 23-minute non-stop run. This focus on personal progress and surpassing my own records keeps me highly motivated and committed to improving my performance.
Competing against myself has made me get better myself each day.

Conclusion: Achieving the Best Shape of My Life
In conclusion, Orangetheory Fitness has been a game-changer for me. I’ve built muscle and now measure my progress based on body fat percentage, rather than relying solely on the scale’s reading. This fitness program aligns perfectly with what matters to me, providing real-time feedback based on science and data, kickstarting my day with a positive mindset and a sense of achievement, all before most people are even out of bed.
Embracing the Orangetheory Fitness approach has revolutionized my fitness journey, and I’m proud of the shape I’m in today. Now I ask you, what’s your fitness story?
